Years and years ago, I was on a cross country flight. I had a headache, and I couldn't fall asleep. I just had my eyes closed and needed something to help focus on.
I gave myself a sort of mental challenge to try and recall the soundtrack of Sonic 1's zones. Focusing on the task distracted me from my headache and I did so and moved on to the second game, and then fizzled out somewhere during the third.
The thing is, it was such a useful way to draw my attention to something else that I kept doing it. (In practice, I just pick a game to start with and am usually asleep or no long dwelling on whatever.
But it has been literal years now, and on many occassions I have tried to do the same with any other music. Mega Man seems like it would be a perfect fit, but then only MM2 ever gets anywhere and even then I've never gotten through the 8 stage themes. It's kind of neat how specifically Genesis era Sonic music is locked-in more than any other game music.
