FINALLY!

No ADOM class has given me more almosts than wizards. I've lost several on D50, died in pretty much every temple with one, and have nuked so many with fatfingers when casting Magic Missile

Around the time I realized just how overpowered slaying missiles were, my interests in pure magic users really dropped off since I'd be using magic bolts instead of arrows.

This win actually has a half-finished writeup so let's just paste that

I have been playing ADOM for 13 years now, and this is only my fifth victory, and winning at this game still feels (as far as video games are concerned) like a major accomplishment that no other game has come close to for me.

Looking at my preserved victory logs, my first win as Micah the Drakeling Paladin was just short of 10 years ago. (April 13th, 2006!)

I've played wizards a lot of times. They're definitely my preferred spellcaster class at least, but despite attempt after attempt after attempt, I could never pull out a win with one.

Additionally I'm now two for three against Andor Drakon. (There was the tragic tale of Sunshine the High Elf Ranger who didn't have any paralysis resistance and died instantly to him.)

For this playthrough, all the hard stuff came easily, while all the easy stuff was a pain. I started with acid bolt and lightning ball, two very high cost spells which liked to destroy equipment on the ground. I opted for my usual beginning strategy: Go to the bandit village and kill a bandit for the first kill, enter the SMC and find the stairs (and blanket!) before hitting level 6. Then doing the raider lord quest for the early 3000 gold.

The first floor of the Puppy Cave had a neutral altar which meant safe equipment and holy water right away. After getting the tiny dog corpse I stashed it at the food store intended to complete the quest later on when I'd need the lawful boost. After the Puppy Cave I went through the Unremarkable Dungeon which led up to its name, nothing but forges and pools. One day I'll bother with smithing.

After taking the back route out of the High Mountain Village I was able to pick up the Courage quest while still neutral and start heading to the Caverns of Chaos down to Dwarftown. I believe a mixed tension room here is where I accidentally magic missiled a cat, giving up the ring of the master cat down the line. The worst part with that is that I even thought prior to casting that I haven't seen the back of the room yet and there might be more monsters out of vision.

My random monster quest was a Stone Statue which took me longer to find than I would've hoped. More importantly, the shop in Dwarftown had a Ring of Djinni Summoning for sale which meant an easy and safe way to save Khelly.

I headed back to the surface, finishing the pyramid as well as the Dwarven Graveyard. Both of these went smoothly, and I used the Mummy Warpping's cold immunity to trivialize the necromancer's frost bolts. I believe this is when I found my scroll of education, and wound up getting the Courage skill from it. I opted to finish the quest since I didn't see on the wiki what would happen if I did and wanted to find out. (I figured he'd just boost the skill, instead you just get a plain two-handed sword). After finishing that quest it was safe to go chaotic and begin working on getting the ratling his six artifacts.

I still hadn't found a Stone Statue and was running out of locations. I ended up going to the Tomb of High Kings with no way to safely get the ring at the end yet. I did manage to find one there at least which meant I could do the other Dwarftown quests, none of which were any difficult.

Khelly got saved, and I did the water temple easily enough with Frost Bolts, which I had found a ton of spellbooks for and was my main offensive spell for most of the game.

AND THAT'S ALL I WROTE

Back in the present, one thing I remember is that in the Andor Drakon fight, I had found a very good strategy of having Andor stand on a wall and me next to him, so the arrows I was firing kept landing at my feet to be picked up instantly.

It also became my character's birthday when he was fighting Drakon. Ascending to godhood is a pretty good present I suppose.
